I know the advertisement reads that these radios have a 24 mile, unimpeded, line of sight range, but I figured if they had that kind of range, they should reach more than a mile or two on normal rural terrain. After a mile or two, I was unable to communicate with the second radio, on high power setting. Oh, and you need an $87.00 FCC license to use the GMS channels. I didn't see that mentioned in the description!

The Midland Outfitter Series GXT1050VP4 is no better then any other radios I have used. The GMRS side of the radio will not let you work repeaters for those that are licensed for this service. Range is a joke and the audio could be better the drop in charger only shows when the radios are charging but the light remains on after the battery is fully charged unlike the Talkabout Motorola radios I own. I feel this could shorten the battery life as they are always charging. I called Midland and they told me to charge the radios 8-10 hours max so I don't over charge and damage the batteries. You can not adjust the squelch on these radios as one radio does not hear as well as the other. Another call to Midland was of no help.On the plus side the ear microphones work well and the display is readable day and night.

I puchased this set thinking it may work for use in a racecar and fit comfortably under a helmet. The headset fits fine and works, but the volume output is too low to make it usefull for what I needed it for. The push-to-talk switch is also difficult to use, but again, my intention was to use it in a racecar. I'm sure the set works great for what it was actually intended. Not good for a loud racecar. Too bad, because it fit very well under a helmet.

After careful research of all available GMRS radios on the market, I choose Midlands top of the line GXT series radios. Midland has always made some of the best products over the years and I had to give these a try. I recently moved to a rather remote rural area and felt the need to have some additional ways of communication. The truth is, all of the high end consumer radios no matter that the wattage, are limited in range given the terrain you happen to be in unfortunately. Just to prove this, I did some range testing: 1: Rural w/ trees and some houses from house standing outside to max range in car was 2 miles. 2: Outside hunting with partner, ear pieces, forest canvas, 2 miles with elevation changes, excellent reception with more range easily available if needed. 3: Top of small elevation to house inside was over 3 miles loud and clear, so is it possible to get longer range if there are limited trees and obstructions. All of these tests were on high power (5 watts) and high power channels with privacy codes set.

I will be testing some more this month with various conditions.

Overall, I was very happy with these radio's. They are extremely durable, reliable, and well made.

Positives: Durable, functional features, battery life (8+hours on high), car charger, home charger, ear pieces, tons of privacy options with the channel selection, whisper function really works, vibrate mode that works excellent.

Negatives: Range is always hard to find with obstructions ( as with any radio). Midland does not have repeater channels on these top of the line GXT radio's. These radio's would be the complete package if they did.

I highly recommend these radios for any adult.

I just got these radios for a blowout bargain on Amazon! The package came 5 days earlier than the origanal delivery date! I walked a long way up a hill with many slopes and got a signal as clear as I was talking to the person! The LED flashlight is an excellent feature along with the NOAA weather radio! It also came with a free car charger in the box! It also comes with a nice desktop charger that works very well. The backlighted screen is amazing! The 121 privacy codes are great for not getting interferance by annoying other people. There is a great hands free feature so you do not even have to push the talk button! There are many call tones that you can pick from. Overall I would recommend this Motorola Talkabout Em1000r radio over any other radio! It is the best quality and signal you can get!

My brother and I took these radios to the canyons at park city on a ski trip. they worked great. battery life was impressive. never ran down with moderate use and on all day. I could reach him on the slopes with me down at the lodge. range is of course not as advertised. When testing I got about 0.5-1mile city. certainly up to several miles up on the mountain. clarity was outstanding. I don't think you can find a better radio in this category. Highly recommend.

Sure, they lack a lot of the fancy bells and whistles but they have range and clarity that some of the other hand-held radios in the net lacked. Some of the other members were so impressed, they wanted to know where they could get some. I'm buying some more now before these babies sell out, again!

These GXT's are my second set of Midland two-way radios. They carry a strong signal and work well, the features and options are quite complicated and I have not used the headsets or the privacy code options, I don't need them. Just turn on the rotary switch and key-up. Ideal for carpooling, family camping, hotels, boating, festivals, RVing, etc. These radios are very simple and easy to use, or they can be as complicated as you want with the privacy coding options. I read the instruction manual fully and initially was intimidated, but actually they are very simple, turn them on push the button and talk. Another good thing about this package set-up is that it comes with all the batteries and AC/DC chargers, charge them at home or in your vehicle. The EM1000R radios are very good. They are good for short range 2-way radio general usage. You must remember that there is NO scramble mode on these radios, so absolutely no possibility of any privacy at all (000%). Motorola refers to the CTCSS & DCS codes correctly as Eliminator Codes. Too many manufacturers refer to them as Privacy Codes (which is INCORRECT). CTCSS/DCS do not offer any privacy at all. They help keep out unwanted conversations from being received by the radio. But do not block or prevent anyone else on any other FRS/GMRS or SCANNER radio from hearing you. The EM1000R has all 38 standard CTCSS tones. And has 83 DCS codes available.

Here are a couple of things I really like about the EM1000R radios:

- Very good pickup on the built-in MIC
- Very good audio on the built-in speaker (perhaps the best)
- the QT mode is very cool. When ENABLED, it prevents other
radio users using the same CHANNEL and QUIET CODE from being
heard by blocking reception of those radios. Very very cool
feature. It blocks the other non-motorola radios even if they
are using the same CTCSS/DCS code. Again, very cool feature.
- the ALERT button is cool. Its very similar to EMERGENCY
buttons used on Motorola Trunk and Conventional Radio Systems.
It activates the PTT with an ALERT for 8 seconds, then turns ON the MIC
automatically on the affected radio for 22 seconds. And turns
the VOLUME UP all the way on any and all other Motorola EM1000R
radios that are receiving the signal. Then cranks the VOLUME
back down to the regular level after the 22 seconds. Very cool
function/feature. Very well thought out Motorola. Congrats!
- Weather Radio Alert is always nice, thank you Motorola
- LED flashlight is very cool, thank you Motorola
- The many, many ways to recharge the batteries. Way to go Motorola.
- The END Squelch Tail is eliminated when using either CTCSS or DCS codes on any channel. Hooray, glad to see the END Squelch Tail finally eliminated. Motorola, you are the BEST, thank you. I have been wanting radios that eliminate that darn END Squelch tail. It is so annoying. Thank you Motorola for including this feature in the EM1000R radio!

Now for the things I do NOT like about the EM1000R:

- No basic SCRAMBLE mode (Inversion Mode would have better than none)
- Power output is at fixed level while on GMRS channels. Would of
liked to have either HI/LO or HI/MED/LO options while on GMRS channels.
FRS channels 8-14 are locked at 1/2-watt power output on all radios, of course, per the FCC.
- There is a SCAN/SEARCH feature. No FRS/MURS/GMRS radio should have ever been manufactured with a SEARCH/SCAN feature. It is the reason we have so many problems/complaints with these services. If you want to SCAN, get a SCANNER radio. That is what they are designed to do. FRS/MURS/GMRS radios should have never been made with SCAN/SEARCH feaures. One of the biggest mistakes ever made to these radio services.
That is why we have so much on-air HARRASSMENT and RF STALKING that takes place by your snooping neighbors.

To summarize, I really really like the QT mode. It keeps out non-EM1000R radios from being heard on your radio even if they are using the correct CHANNEL and CTCSS/DCS code. Having a RF power setting would have been nice while on the GMRS channels, to control the power output. And no SCRAMBLE mode means there is privacy from other FRS/GMRS and SCANNER radios. Of course, Audio-Inversion scrambling does not offer much protection from ease-dropping anyway. But it offers at least alittle bit. So, when operating these or any FRS/MURS/GMRS radio, make sure to use CODES, NICKNAMES and do NOT give out REAL NAMES, PHONE NUMBERS, EMAIL ADDRESSES and try not to give out your location. Use abbreviations when possible, and use CODED-LOCATIONs, if you must. Say things like: I am on the A street, or B street, or similar. Remember, there are KIDDIES-PUNKs listening. There are OLD-FARTS and CROOKS listening too, just waiting to use your personal info against you.

I purchased the Motorolas for my 10 year old son who started going to friends houses with his bike in the range of two miles or there about.
Since he is too young for a cell phone and he forgets to call me when ever he gets there I decided to try the walkie talkies and they do a pretty good job.
I would say the Motorola radios work clearly as far as 3 miles around the neighborhood .....forget the 35 miles!
I had to change channels to find the good one and add the no interference option and now it's very clear and it works for us...most important it gives me a peace of mind when my son is out with his friends.
The batteries last a long time and they're rechargeable...a big plus.
Overall it is a good buy and good quality product... very recommended especially for worrying moms :)

I have purchased many Motorola two-way radios over the years, and they continue to disapppoint. They stop working very soon and the advertized range is a joke, even on very flat terrain. For this one, after about a week, it began turning itself off when I pushed the talk button; very problematic when issuing instructions to four other vehicles driving in a foreign country when I am the only one who knows where we are going.

I must be insane for continuing to spend money on them. The problem is that I need them for my a specific function in my work. Price doesn't seem to be an issue with these radios. When they work, they work great, but they cannot be counted on in crunch time. I buy 6 at a time, and one or two always fail.

We have these radios for our 11 yr old son. My husband afternoons and I'm disabled and can't walk. The radios are so that I can contact him to keep track of him during the day.
These are replacements for some other brand that lasted not even a year. I'm hoping these last for awhile but even if they don't they seem worth it. My husband saw these exact same radios at another store for much more. They most certainly don't work up to 23 miles but they're good for what we needed them for.

I bought the pair with re-chargable batteries and the charger included for 19.99.All 16-26 mile 2-ways are about the same as far as distance.About a mile.It's possible the GMRS channels I heard on scan were much further away since they were talking about looking for street names located miles away from my home.This radio works just as good inside for picking up transmissions as it dose outside,if not better!I dropped one the other day and it still works fine.Iam not sure how long the charged radio last while in use,mabey an hour? We recently bought 4 of these TSX-300 units for use on our family ski trip. I was primarily persuaded to buy these by another review about trying to find channels not used by other skiers -- as in, maybe you don't want your kids being "educated" on the perspectives of some other 16 year-old kid. If you like the privacy idea and don't need to talk to friends who have other radios, these units are perfect.

A second feature that comes with these, but not the lower end TSX-100 units, is the text messaging. It may seem like kind of a silly concept. However, if you are skiing, it is not always convenient to talk. If you are trying to raise your buddy on the radio, and he is in teh midst of staying alive and doging trees, it would be nice to leave him a message. The text messaging allows you to do just that. The only thing to keep in mind is that the delivery of your text message is not guaranteed, so you need to be fairly certain that your buddy is in range.

In terms of range, as some other reviewers have noted, the range is just under 1/2 mile in a typical neighborhood with houses and trees. Our neighborhood is pretty flat. We did experience a range of a mile if we were on top of the sledding hill at the other end of the neighborhood. At the ski resort, they worked all over the mountain. In addition, we could be skiing on the mountain and actually reach someone in our lodge room, which was located about 3 blocks from the base of the mountain.

One last point is that we had trouble with one of our radios about a week after we bought the two sets. It stopped receiving and transmitting. I contacted customer service through the email on the TriSquare web site excatly 7 days before flying out for skiing. They emailed me right back and got me a replacement unit, which worked splendidly. That is the only issue we have had with the units and we used them a lot skiing.

These radios are excellent. Simple: choose a channel, then a privacy setting, and you're ready to talk. I am the kind of person that does not read manuals, I just want to get the stuff working intuitively. I did have to read somewhat, only one paragraph! And I had the radios working. Now THAT was cool!
The conversations chopped up a little bit when we were 5 or more floors apart, but other than that, the communication was clear. I even talked when I was inside the elevator, 4-5 floors away! Battery life is great. Size is great, does not get hot. It has a zillion features that I doubt we'll ever use. Great for talking, keys and screen have backlight. The flashlight was very useful to help us watch our step while sneaking out from the dark theater (I won't review the cruise entertainers here, geez whiz!!) Love 'em.

We bought these for camping with the kids. Great range, easy to use. Decent sound quality - radio's all sound 'tinny'. We've had others in the past that were cheaper, but these are by far the best. Also, the built in LED flashlight is a big plus while camping!

I purchased a set of these walkie-talkies with the eye towards having an alternate means of contact should the cellphones not work in a disaster scenario. What is NOT mentioned in the product review is that a federal FCC license for GMRS walkie-talkies is REQUIRED, and that said license cost EIGHTY FIVE ($85) DOLLARS! You also need an FCC call sign - issued at the time you pay the license fee - that you MUST use every time you transmit on the radio. Otherwise you have only the use of a few channels that can be accessed by a cheap $10 pair of walkie-talkies. Trying to use these radios without the FCC license is playing with fire - the fine is in the thousands of dollars and you are very easy to find.

For someone who intends to use these radios infrequently if ever - just as a second option in an emergency - paying $85 is simply absurd, and Amazon should INFORM prospective buyers of the fee and license requirements to use even half of the available frequencies.

These radios work very well, we purchased these for use while at SeaWorld San Antonio. The units have an actual range of about 3 miles in dense city building, and are VERY clear. The unit has built in NOAA weather alerts, it alerted us while testing that I was under a flash flood watch that my local radio broadcast over an hour later! We found SeaWorld used channel 3 and we listened to trainers talking about different random things lol. The units are very well built, they were dropped several times and were wet during the shamu show and several water rides. They lasted without charging for about 14 hours of moderate use as well... We are looking into getting a second set for friends when we all go to the lake! The manual did tell us that we would require a FCC GMRS license for certain channels. ±1±: Best Buy I had been using FRS/GMRS radio for years and my previous model was Motorola T250 and T6400. In comparison, GXT1000 is a bit on the bulky side. Mainly because it is much thicker. Therefore, carrying it in my package can be little awkward. However, the included belt clip works well. The range is far greater then my old GMRS T6400. Testing in a suburb setting, I was able to get reliable range at around 2 miles when both operators are on the ground level, outside of any building. When one operator move to higher ground (fifth floor), the range extended to 5 miles.

The included headset is simply a joke. I can't get to fit on my ear and mic will only pick conversation if I cup my hand around it.

With that said, it is overall still a good value given its build quality and range.

I ordered these for a camp, in order for the adults to be able to instantly communicate with each other, as some of the cellphones would not work well, due to various carriers not having service in that area. These radios worked out great. I realized that I needed more and I have since ordered more for next years camp. Every adult decided they needed to have one. This new enhancement has taken our camp to a higher level. The sound is crisp and clear. The range of them is excellent for our needs. It has a range of up to 12 miles, but we only needed like 2 miles. It has many channels to select from. I have no complaints whatsoever. I took extra batteries and was prepared to switch them out every other day. No big deal for me. The value of them and the use of them outweighed the need to switch out batteries.
