What Do HD Radios Cost?

!: What Do HD Radios Cost?

Because HD radio is a relatively new technology, the cost of HD radios is a bit on the high side. For example, the Radiosophy Web site lists its MultiStream radio for 9. This compact, tabletop radio has a 4" x 8" , removable receiver (it can be removed from its speakers) that can be easily taken from room to room. It also has a large, easy-to-read LCD monitor that can be read from across the room. Radiosophy also says the MultiStream HD radio receives everything - analog AM and FM, HD AM and FM and sub channels.

The suggested retail price of Boston Acoustics' Recepter radio HD is 9 but there is a rebate offer at this time, bringing the price to a more reasonable 9.. You can get more information on Boston Acoustics HD Radio prices and availability, by visiting the Boston Acoustics Web site.

Cambridge Soundworks recently announced its Radio 820HD, also with a price of 9.99 and, again a rebate.

On an even higher-end, there is the Polk Audio I-Sonic HD Entertainments System at 9 before a rebate.

Two lower-cost units are now available. They are the Accurian HD Radio from RadioShack (9 before a rebate) and the Sangeon HDR-1 for 1.95 which is available through amazon.com.

HD radio for car owners

Car owners who would like to get into HD Technology radio have a broader range of HD radio prices from which to choose.

As examples of HD radio prices for car decks, Best Buy has the Kenwood EZ500 for 9.99, the KDC-MP228 for 9.99 and the KDC-MP528 for 9.99. All three of these decks are multi-functional with MP3 playback as well as HD reception.

Another example of HD Radio prices is Circuit City with the Panasonic CO-C9701U In-Dash CD Player at 5.99. Plus, Crutchfield.com has the Kenwood KTC-HR100MC HD-compatible tuner for 9.99 and the Eclipse HDR-105 tuner for 9.99.

HD tuners for component systems

The only four companies currently offering HD tuners for use in component systems are Sangeon, Audio Design Associates, Yamaha and Day-Sequerra.

Sangeon's HDT-1 HD Radio component tuner has a suggested retail price of 9, but is currently available on a pre-order basis.

The ADA Quadri-tune receiver is expected to release during the fourth quarter of this year and, of this writing, the company has not announced a price. Day-Sequerra has announced its M2 and M4 receivers will start at 95.

Yamaha's high-end RX-V600 Home Theater Receiver with HD Radio currently sells for ,899.

Day-Seguerra is yet to announce details and pricing of its HD component tuners.

But as you can see, the good news is there are now more choices in HD Radio ... and more to come in the near future.

Ham Radio's Annual National Contest - Field Day!

!: Ham Radio's Annual National Contest - Field Day!

Once each year thousands and thousands of ham radio operators participate in what some consider to be an annual contest - Field Day. Field Day has a more serious side to it than being just a contest however. I call it a contest because the national organization of ham radio, the American Radio Relay League does actually keep scores for each ham radio station that participates in Field Day. While most hams do want to get their score as high as possible during Field Day the objective is to practice and refine communications skills "in the field".

Many ham radio operators have sophisticated home base stations with large antenna towers and high gain beam antennas. The main objective of Field Day is designed for the portable ham radio operator. The objective is to demonstrate and refine the ability to communicate "in the field".

Once each year thousands and thousands of amateur radio operators participate in what some consider to be an annual contest - Field Day. Field Day has a more serious side to it than being just a contest however. I call it a contest because the national organization of amateur radio, the American Radio Relay League does actually keep scores for each ham radio station that participates in Field Day. While most hams do want to get their score as high as possible during Field Day the objective is to practice and refine communications skills "in the field".

Many amateur radio operators have sophisticated home base stations with large antenna towers and high gain beam antennas. For Field Day those hams are not allowed to use that equipment. Field Day is designed for the portable amateur radio operator. The objective is to demonstrate and practice the ability to transport, assemble and operate their equipment in the field. There are strict rules preventing the use of permanent structures.

Field Day's benefit becomes crystal clear when you consider that many ham radio operators freely provide high quality portable radio communications in disaster situations. Hurricane season is prime time for such communications. Tornado outbreaks also are a time when such communications capabilities become very valuable. The ability to transport and quickly assemble a high quality amateur radio stations and operate it under stress for an extended period of time is exactly what is tested at Field Day. The scores that are obtained in the contest are roughly indicative of the performance described above.

Is Field Day all work and no play? Usually not! Hams can do Field Day alone. Large numbers of ham amateur radio operators participate as a group. In Appleton Wisconsin and in Green Bay Wisconsin the local ham radio clubs host group events. In each event there is some form of shelter provided. Different members bring their ham radios of various types, computers for digital mode communications, antennas and of course food and drinks. Events such as these are a great time for amateur radio operators to get to know each other and trade stories of rare radio contacts and operating experiences.

Field Day contest points are scored by contacting other ham radio stations. The person or group that makes the most contacts on the most frequencies typically wins the contest. The results of the contest are published in QST which is the monthly magazine of the national organization for amateur radio operators. Being published in a monthly magazine provides bragging rights for those that win the contest.

While winning the contest is a fun achievement it proves that the amateur radio operator that won the contest is quite skilled at making a large amount of contacts over a 24 hour time period. Information must also be exchanged and then accurately reported by both radio operators for the points to be scored. This represents the ability to exchange large volumes of information in a high stress event like a disaster. Tune your radio to the ham radio bands on Field Day each year and find out just how many people participate in this event. To find the specific day of the event or to find an event near you that is open to the public search Google or other search engine for "field day open to public" without the quotes. I know that the amateur radio clubs in Green Bay Wisconsin and Appleton Wisconsin would love to have visitors!

How to Use 2 Way Radios

!: How to Use 2 Way Radios

A 2 way radio is basically used for two way communication. These radios are used in various applications mainly for the purpose of communication. These can be used in military organizations, in businesses, in hospitals, in shopping malls and for outdoor adventures.

This type of a radio can be used either in duplex or simplex mode. When a 2 way radio is used in a simplex mode, the communication can take place from only one side. This is very much like a telephone conversation where a user dials a number, waits for the other user to pick up the phone and then starts speaking. Almost the same happens in simplex communication. A radio first locates another one to which the data has to be sent. Once this radio has been located, the message is transferred over a single channel. When the other radio receives the message, it responds to the message by sending some data over the same channel that was used for sending data.

The other mode used for two way communication by a 2 way radio is the duplex mode. In this mode, data is sent and received at the same time over different channels. When one user locates another one, both can transmit data at the same time by using two different channels. This mode of transmission is a better mode as large data can be transferred at any given time.

When these radios are transmitting data, there might be times when they pick up noise or messages from other locations. When this happens, the message is not received clearly. There may also be times when a static frequency is picked up by the radio and the radio cannot transmit for that period of time. These problems have to be overcome so that messages can be sent and received clearly. This can be done by making use of various accessories that eliminate the noise or extra signals that the radio might have picked up. One way is to use hearing aids so that the message can be received clearly. Another option is to use induction loops in which messages can be sent by eliminating the noise. Yet another way of ensuring that these radios can be used for clear transmission is by using assistive listening systems. 2 way radios can also be used more effectively by using sound suppression techniques.

When 2 way radios are used in organizations where there is a lot of noise, it must be ensured that all sound producing elements are either removed or techniques must be used to suppress the noises. Also it must be ensured that the radios operate in a vibration mode when they are used in offices. When these radios are used in factories where noise level is very high, sound absorption panels must be installed so that the transmission of data takes place in a clear manner. Noise filtering can also be used to eliminate the extra noises or signals that have been picked up by the radio. Also one must try and use digital transmission when using the 2 way radios as this ensures that the data that is transmitted is very clear.
